History

In the late 1970’s, Michael Kahn and Leda Levant, while living in Sedona, met a couple in Cornville who owned acreage along Oak Creek and invited Michael and Leda to live as caretakers on a uniquely isolated riparian section of property.

Being an artist, Michael immediately began invoking some of his painting aesthetics into a third dimension, transforming natural features such as stone and river wood into surreal, fluid, cavern-like structures coated in high-vibrational colors.

For 28 years, Michael built these structures with the help of his wife and friends. His work seems more shamanic than artistic as his methodology defied convention. Michael never explained his creation, it just is. The most significant of his sculptural work is the half subterranean structures of Eliphante the first experimental building, Pipedreams, the art gallery, and Hippodome, where the couple lived. In between the buildings, stone paths cut through a natural, yet sculpted environment. Any possible insights from those who knew him elude the logical mind.

During their years creating Eliphante, it was a magical environment full of spontaneous social interaction that left the most endearing and unforgettable memories for those involved with it.

Ideas

This is one of the most magical places on earth! I have had the honor and pleasure of staying at Eliphante twice now. It is one of the most magical, beautiful, inspiring places I have ever been to. When I was a kid I used to dream of places like this- art you can live in essentially. I would recommend Eliphante to anyone. It really is one of my favorite places to visit.

KIMI RECOR

Clairevoyant Musician
I sat on the floor a long time and watched the infinitesimal changes in the patterns of colored light. The light shimmered and moved, and the entire vibe was incredibly psychedelic. As I moved through the space, I wondered how much LSD (or other hallucinogens) Michael Kahn had taken in his lifetime, or if he were just one of those people who naturally experiences life as one continual psychedelic trip.

BLAIZE SUN

Rubber Tramp Artist
Melodic to say — and hard to explain. People say you can’t put it into words. You just have to be there. It’s beautiful and shaded....with amorphous sculptures and little shacks drenched in color. A hodgepodge of so many things: stacked rocks on the wall, a carpet mosaic on the floor, shiny Mylar on the ceiling. It nudges you to create something beautiful and strange and free of rules in your own life.
